Republican Georgia election officials are trying to ignore the state’s own election and substitute a newly made up interpretation to keep people who are registering to vote for John Ossoff from voting in June.

Republicans have a lousy candidate in Karen Handel. They have no voter enthusiasm, and Democrats have all the momentum, so of course, Republicans are going to try to suppress the vote. It is revealing that the GOP has to resort to these measures in a district that has not gone Democratic since 1979. It has been a solidly Republican House seat for nearly 40 years, but the tide has turned to such a degree against the Republican Party, that they are trying to rig a game that they should have already won.

The clearly written state law on registration cutoffs for runoffs predates this election (and has not been previously challenged) so there is no targeting of, or changes in made for, this particular election.
Both sides have their legal positions and it will be up to the court to decide which side is correct.

In Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council, decided June 17, 2013 by the Roberts Supreme Court, Justice Antonin Scalia wrote for the majority (7-2), "holding that the State requirements were pre-empted by the federal law ... ".
